How Carbon Vanes Work

If you are looking at this page to verify a replacement part, it helps to understand why the exact serial match matters. Vacuum pump vanes are precision-engineered wear items.

As the central rotor spins, centrifugal force throws these carbon sliders outward against the housing wall, creating the vacuum seal. Because they constantly scrape against the cylinder, they slowly wear down into carbon dust over time. If a vane gets too short, it can flip sideways and shatter, completely seizing the pump.

How to install carbon vanes in your vacuum pump

The correct installation of vane is very important. You should clean the rotor slot, not just with compressed are as this can push dust and debris further into the pump body. If your vanes have broke or chipped if they have worn below the minimum, then ALL bits must be removed to ensure none can damage the new vanes. Thee diagram illustrates the way the vane should be placed in the slot. Each vane should be placed in one at a time, at the top, then the rotor should be turned round ensuring the vane drops smoothly as the rotor turns.
