BECKER VTLF 500 REPLACEMENT VANES

REPLACING BECKER VTLF 500 CARBON VANES

The Becker VTLF 500 has five long rotor slots, each containing two carbon graphite vanes, giving a total of ten vanes. Both vanes within each slot must move freely during operation. Wear, contamination or damage affecting either vane can lead to uneven running and potential pump problems. Regular inspection should therefore cover the complete ten-vane set, the full accessible length of the rotor slots and the internal running surfaces. New vanes have a height of 88 mm, with a confirmed minimum wear height of 60 mm.

VTLF 500 VANE INSPECTION & FITTING PROCEDURE

1. Isolate and prepare the pump. Disconnect the electrical supply, prevent accidental starting and allow the VTLF 500 to cool. Make connected equipment safe and follow Becker’s maintenance instructions before opening the pump.
2. Remove and inspect all ten vanes. Carefully withdraw both vanes from each of the five rotor slots. Examine the complete set for cracks, chipped edges, uneven wear or missing sections. Measure each vane against the 60 mm minimum wear height and compare the condition of the two vanes from each slot.
3. Inspect all five long rotor slots. Shine a suitable inspection light down the accessible length of each slot, including the far ends. Examine both vane positions for accumulated deposits, scoring, damage or restrictions that could prevent the vanes moving freely.
4. Remove dust and broken fragments. Thoroughly clean the rotor slots, cylinder and accessible internal surfaces. Check the air boxes for broken vane pieces and remove all fragments. Controlled compressed air may be used where permitted by Becker’s instructions, with suitable dust control and protection. Avoid blowing debris further into the pump.
5. Check the replacement vanes. Confirm WN 124-205 and dimensions of 220 × 88 × 6 mm. Each new vane must slide smoothly into its designated position without binding. Check both vane positions in every slot. Never force a tight-fitting vane; investigate any restriction before proceeding.
6. Fit the first pair correctly. Position the first rotor slot at the top and insert its two replacement vanes in accordance with Becker’s instructions. Observe the correct orientation: the higher edge is the leading edge and the chamfer follows behind. Ensure both vanes are correctly positioned and can move freely.
7. Rotate and fit the remaining pairs. Carefully rotate the rotor by hand until the fitted slot is at the bottom. Check that both vanes drop easily and smoothly within their slot. Bring the next slot to the top and fit another pair. Repeat until all ten vanes are installed across the five slots, then rotate the rotor by hand to check that all vanes move freely.
8. Complete the final inspection. Confirm that every slot contains two vanes, with no binding or remaining debris. Check the cylinder, end plates, bearings, inlet filtration and cooling arrangements as appropriate. Investigate abnormal scoring or damage before reassembling and testing the pump in accordance with Becker’s instructions.
