REPLACING BECKER VTLF 2.200 CARBON VANES

The Becker VTLF 2.200 is a dry-running rotary vane vacuum pump using five carbon graphite vanes. Regular inspection is important because vane wear, cracking or restricted movement can affect pump performance and lead to further internal damage. New vanes have a height of 65 mm, with a confirmed minimum wear height of 41 mm. Physical damage or abnormal wear may require replacement before this limit is reached.

VTLF 2.200 VANE INSPECTION & FITTING PROCEDURE

1. Isolate the pump. Disconnect the electrical supply, prevent accidental starting and allow the VTLF 2.200 to cool. Follow the appropriate Becker maintenance instructions before opening the pump.
2. Remove and inspect the five vanes. Carefully support each vane during removal. Check for cracks, chipped edges, uneven wear and missing pieces. Measure their remaining height against the 41 mm minimum.
3. Examine the rotor slots. Use a suitable inspection light to check each slot along its accessible length, including the far ends. Look for deposits, scoring, damage or restrictions that could prevent free vane movement.
4. Clean the internal components. Remove carbon graphite dust and all broken vane fragments from the rotor slots, cylinder and accessible internal areas. Controlled compressed air may be used where permitted by Becker’s instructions, with suitable dust control and protection. Do not blow debris further into the pump.
5. Check the replacements. Confirm WN 124-196 and dimensions of 355 × 65 × 5 mm. Each vane must slide smoothly along its rotor slot without binding. Never force or tap a tight-fitting vane into position.
6. Fit the first vane correctly. Insert the replacement vane into the upper accessible slot, ensuring the higher edge is the leading edge and the chamfer follows behind.
7. Rotate and continue fitting. Carefully rotate the rotor by hand in accordance with Becker’s instructions. Check the movement of the installed vane, then repeat the process until all five replacement vanes are fitted.
8. Complete the final checks. Ensure all vanes move freely and no loose fragments remain. Inspect the cylinder, end plates, bearings and Becker 909512 inlet filter as appropriate. Investigate any significant damage before reassembly and testing.
