Busch R5 RA 0025 F – RA 0100 F Troubleshooting Guide

This Busch R5 troubleshooting guide is designed to help identify common operating problems on the Busch R5 RA 0025 F, RA 0040 F, RA 0063 F and RA 0100 F oil lubricated rotary vane vacuum pumps. These pumps are widely used across packaging, printing, CNC, food processing and food packaging, medical, laboratory and general industrial applications, so loss of vacuum, overheating, oil mist or unusual noise can quickly lead to production issues.

Many faults are caused by routine service items such as low oil level, blocked inlet filters, saturated oil separator elements, worn couplings, contaminated oil or restricted cooling airflow. In some cases, the pump may only need a service kit, oil change, filter replacement or basic inspection. In other cases, continuing to run the pump can make the problem worse and may lead to vane, bearing or internal pump damage.

Use the guide below as a practical fault-finding checklist. Start with the symptom that best matches your pump problem, then review the possible causes and recommended actions. If the same fault returns after basic checks, or if the pump is noisy, running hot, discharging oil mist or failing to reach the usual vacuum level, the pump should be inspected by a competent vacuum pump engineer.

VacAir Superstore can supply Busch R5 service kits, vacuum pump oil, oil separators, inlet filters, vanes and other spare parts. We also provide repair advice, workshop servicing and complete Busch vacuum pump overhauls for customers throughout the UK.

The pump does not reach the usual vacuum level

Pump is not reaching the appropriate vacuum level

Possible Cause Recommended Action
Oil level too low. Top up the vacuum pump oil to the correct level.
Inlet screen partially blocked. Clean the inlet screen and check for debris or restriction.
Optional inlet filter partially blocked. Replace the inlet filter.
Internal parts worn or damaged. The pump may require inspection, repair or overhaul. Contact VacAir for advice.

The pump runs very noisily

Pump running noisily

Possible Cause Recommended Action
Worn coupling. Replace the coupling.
Stuck vanes. The pump should be inspected and repaired by a VacAir engineer. Contact our Service Department
Defective bearings. Arrange inspection and repair by VacAir. Bearing wear should not be ignored as it can lead to further pump damage. This should only be completed by a competent engineer.

The pump runs too hot

Pump operating temperature too high

Possible Cause Recommended Action
Insufficient cooling. Remove dust and dirt from the pump, check that the cooling fan is working and not broken, and make sure airflow around the pump is not restricted.
Ambient temperature too high. Check the operating environment and keep the pump within the permitted ambient temperature range.
Oil level too low. Top up the vacuum pump oil to the correct level. Do not overfill.
Exhaust filters are partially blocked. Replace the exhaust filters / oil separator elements.

The pump fumes or expels oil droplets

Oil mist, fumes or oil droplets from the exhaust

Possible Cause Recommended Action
Exhaust filters are partially blocked or have become saturated with oil. Replace the exhaust filters / oil separator elements. Oil mist eliminators (OME) become saturated over time as part of the normal process, change them at this time as normal maintenance. Contact VacAir for next day delivery.
Exhaust filter o-ring not seated correctly. Check the exhaust filter and o-ring position and refit correctly if required.
Float valve not working correctly. Check the float valve and oil pipework for clogging. Remove any blockage.
Oil return valve version running too long without interruption. For pumps with an oil return valve, shut the pump down periodically during long running periods so oil can return correctly.

Abnormal oil consumption

Pump using too much oil

Possible Cause Recommended Action
Oil leaks. Check for oil leaks and replace seals where required.
Float valve not working correctly. Inspect the float valve and oil return line. Clean or repair if required.
Pump running at atmospheric pressure for a long period. Make sure the pump is operating under vacuum and is suitable for the application duty cycle. Do not leave the pump running open to atmosphere.

The oil is dark brown or thick

Oil has turned dark brown or thick

Possible Cause Recommended Action
Oil change intervals are too long. Flush the pump and replace with fresh, suitable vacuum pump oil.
Inlet filter is defective. Replace the inlet filter.
Pump running too hot. Check cooling, oil level, ambient temperature and exhaust filters.

The oil is emulsified

Oil appears milky or emulsified

Possible Cause Recommended Action
The pump has drawn in liquid or a significant amount of vapour. Flush the pump, check the gas ballast filter, and review the operating mode to reduce condensable vapours entering the pump.

Need Help Diagnosing Your Busch R5 Vacuum Pump?
