Vacuum Pumps for Vacuum Clamping Applications

Reliable vacuum clamping for CNC machining, routing, trimming, assembly fixtures and industrial production systems.

Vacuum clamping is used across many manufacturing sectors where a workpiece must be held securely without mechanical clamps obstructing the machining, trimming, drilling, bonding or assembly process. From CNC routers and flat-bed machining centres to dedicated jigs, fixtures, pods and automated production cells, the vacuum pump is a critical part of the system.

VacAir Superstore supplies new, replacement and refurbished vacuum pumps for vacuum clamping applications across the UK. We also provide spare parts, carbon vanes, filters, service kits, workshop repairs and technical support for many of the most common pump brands used in this sector, including Becker, Busch, DVP, Elmo Rietschle and Leybold.

What Is Vacuum Clamping?

Vacuum clamping uses negative pressure to hold a component, sheet, panel or workpiece against a table, pod, fixture or jig. Instead of using mechanical clamps around the edge of the material, air is removed from underneath the part. Atmospheric pressure then pushes the component down onto the clamping surface.

This makes vacuum clamping particularly useful when the full top surface or edge of a component needs to remain accessible. It is commonly used where mechanical clamps would get in the way of cutting tools, routers, drills, trimming heads, bonding processes or automated handling equipment.

Typical Vacuum Clamping Uses

  • CNC routing and machining
  • Woodworking vacuum beds
  • Plastic sheet machining
  • Composite trimming and finishing
  • Aerospace component fixtures
  • Jigs for drilling, bonding or assembly
  • Printing and packaging machinery
  • Flat sheet holding and profiling
  • Pod-and-rail clamping systems
  • Automated production fixtures

Why the Pump Matters

The vacuum pump must provide the right balance of flow and vacuum level for the clamping system. A well-sealed fixture may require less flow but a stronger vacuum level, while porous materials, spoil boards, MDF beds, paper, board or timber components often need much higher airflow to compensate for leakage.

If the pump is undersized, worn or poorly matched to the application, the clamping force can become unreliable. This can cause component movement, poor cut quality, scrapped parts, tool damage and production delays.

Vacuum Clamping Is Not Just CNC Woodworking

Vacuum clamping is often associated with CNC woodworking and router beds, but the same principles are used in many other industries. Manufacturers use vacuum to hold aluminium, plastics, composite materials, printed sheets, cardboard, timber, laminates, panels and precision-machined parts where a clean, unobstructed holding method is required.

VacAir can help with both replacement pump selection and fault diagnosis where an existing clamping system has lost performance. We can support customers using single pumps, centralised vacuum systems, zoned vacuum beds, dedicated fixtures and OEM machinery installations.

High Leakage Applications

Porous boards, MDF spoil boards, paper, cardboard and open vacuum beds often allow a large amount of air to pass through the material or fixture. These systems usually need high airflow to maintain clamping performance.

Better Sealed Fixtures

Dedicated vacuum jigs, pods, gasketed plates and sealed fixtures may require less airflow but a stronger and more stable vacuum level. These systems rely on good sealing and correct pump selection.

Production Reliability

In production environments, vacuum clamping must be consistent. A pump that runs hot, loses vacuum or has worn vanes can cause intermittent holding problems that are difficult to diagnose without specialist support.

Common Vacuum Pump Types Used for Vacuum Clamping

The correct pump type depends on the clamping surface, leakage rate, material being held, required vacuum level, duty cycle and production environment. VacAir supplies and supports a wide range of pump technologies used in vacuum clamping applications.

Dry Running Rotary Vane Vacuum Pumps

Dry running rotary vane pumps are one of the most common choices for vacuum clamping, particularly in woodworking, routing, print finishing, packaging and general industrial machinery. They are oil-free in the process air and are often selected where clean, reliable vacuum is needed with straightforward maintenance. They are best for CNC router wood beds and print finishing where oil contamination is a risk.

Common examples include Becker dry running vacuum pumps, Rietschle / Elmo Rietschle KTA and KTR pumps, and equivalent dry vane units used on OEM equipment.

Oil Lubricated Rotary Vane Vacuum Pumps

Oil lubricated rotary vane pumps are often used where a deeper vacuum level is required, especially on better-sealed fixtures, specialist jigs and applications where strong holding force is needed on a sealed surface. They require correct oil, filters and separator maintenance to keep performance reliable. Best for dedicated aerospace/plastic fixtures requiring deep, rock-solid holding forces.

VacAir supplies and supports oil lubricated pumps from brands including Becker, Busch, DVP and Leybold, as well as spares, oil separators and repair support.

Side Channel Blowers

Side channel blowers can be useful where very high airflow is required at relatively low vacuum levels. They are often used where the holding surface is large or where leakage is part of the process. They are not suitable for every clamping application, but they can be effective where flow is more important than deep vacuum. Best for massive, highly porous surfaces requiring extreme flow but low vacuum depth.

Claw Vacuum Pumps

Claw vacuum pumps can be used in larger industrial installations where robust, oil-free vacuum is required. They are often considered for centralised systems or higher-duty production environments, depending on the vacuum level and flow requirements.

Lost Clamping Force or Vacuum Hold-Down?

Weak clamping, moving parts, poor cut finish, slow cycle times or a pump running hot can all point to a vacuum system problem. VacAir can help identify whether the issue is the pump, vanes, filters, leaks, pipework, valves or the clamping fixture itself.

Common Pumps Used in Vacuum Clamping Applications

The following pump models and pump ranges are commonly found in vacuum clamping, vacuum hold-down, CNC routing, fixture holding and production machinery applications. The exact pump required depends on bed size, leakage, material, vacuum level, duty cycle and whether the process requires dry running or oil lubricated vacuum.

Becker VTLF 2.250 / VTLF 250

The Becker VTLF 2.250 and earlier VTLF 250 are widely used in vacuum hold-down and clamping applications, particularly on CNC woodworking routers and larger vacuum bed systems. These dry running pumps are a common choice where high airflow and oil-free operation are required.

VacAir can supply replacement pumps, Becker VTLF 2.250 vanes and Becker VTLF 2.250 service kits.

Becker VTLF 2.500

The Becker VTLF 2.500 is used where larger vacuum beds or higher air demand require a bigger dry running rotary vane pump. It can be suitable for larger CNC machines, multi-zone vacuum beds and applications where maintaining flow is essential for reliable holding.

Becker DVT Series

Becker DVT combined vacuum and pressure pumps are used on many industrial machines where both vacuum and pressure are required. Models such as the Becker DVT 3.60, Becker DVT 3.80, Becker DVT 3.100 and Becker DVT 3.140 may be found on OEM equipment and clamping-related machinery.

Rietschle / Elmo Rietschle KTA & KTR

Rietschle KTA and KTR dry running rotary vane pumps are commonly found on industrial machinery, CNC equipment, print finishing systems and clamping applications. VacAir can help identify replacement options, service parts and repair routes for many older Rietschle and Elmo Rietschle pump models.

Busch R5 Oil Lubricated Pumps

Busch R5 pumps are widely used in industrial vacuum applications and may be suitable for sealed vacuum clamping fixtures where a deeper vacuum level is required. Correct maintenance of oil, filters and separators is important to maintain performance and prevent contamination or overheating.

DVP Vacuum Pumps

DVP dry running and oil lubricated pumps can be used in vacuum clamping applications depending on the vacuum level, duty cycle and leakage rate required. VacAir can advise on DVP alternatives, replacements and equivalent models for new installations or pump upgrades.

Signs a Vacuum Clamping Pump Needs Attention

Loss of clamping performance is not always caused by the pump, but the pump is often the first component to check. Problems can also be caused by leaks, damaged hoses, blocked filters, worn carbon vanes, poor sealing, worn valves, incorrect zoning or a damaged clamping surface.

Weak Holding Force

If parts move during cutting, machining, trimming or drilling, the system may not be achieving enough vacuum level or airflow for the material and fixture design.

Pump Running Hot

A pump running hotter than normal may be overloaded, blocked, worn, contaminated or working against excessive leakage. This should be investigated before further damage occurs.

Reduced Vacuum Reading

A low vacuum gauge reading may indicate air leaks, worn vanes, blocked filters, damaged seals or internal pump wear. Comparing the pump blanked-off performance against system performance can help locate the issue.

Spares, Vanes and Service Kits

Many dry running vacuum pumps used for clamping rely on carbon vanes. As vanes wear, the pump can lose airflow and vacuum performance. Filters also need to be kept clean to prevent restriction, overheating and reduced efficiency.

VacAir supplies Becker vanes, Becker spare parts, Becker service kits and spares for many other vacuum pump brands used in clamping applications.

Vacuum Clamping FAQs

What type of vacuum pump is best for vacuum clamping?

The best pump depends on the material, leakage rate, bed size, fixture design and vacuum level required. Dry running rotary vane pumps are common for CNC beds and general clamping, while oil lubricated rotary vane pumps may be used for better-sealed fixtures that need deeper vacuum.

Is vacuum clamping the same as vacuum hold-down?

The terms are often used in a similar way. Vacuum hold-down is commonly used for flat beds, CNC routers and sheet materials, while vacuum clamping may also refer to dedicated fixtures, pods, jigs and production tooling.

Why does my vacuum clamping system lose holding force?

Common causes include worn vanes, blocked filters, air leaks, damaged hoses, poor sealing, open bed zones, worn valves, contaminated pumps or an undersized vacuum pump. The first step is to separate pump performance from system leakage.

Can a side channel blower be used for vacuum clamping?

Yes, in some applications. Side channel blowers can provide high airflow at lower vacuum levels, which can suit large or leaky holding surfaces. They are not suitable for every clamping process, especially where deeper vacuum is required.

Why are Becker VTLF pumps common on vacuum clamping systems?

Becker VTLF pumps are dry running rotary vane pumps commonly used where reliable airflow and oil-free operation are needed. Models such as the Becker VTLF 2.250 are often found on CNC vacuum beds and industrial hold-down systems.

How do I know if my pump is too small?

If the pump cannot maintain vacuum when the clamping area is open to the normal process leakage, it may be undersized. Signs include weak holding force, unstable gauge readings, parts moving during machining or the pump running continuously without reaching the required level.

Can VacAir help replace an obsolete vacuum clamping pump?

Yes. VacAir can help identify existing pump models and suggest replacement, equivalent or alternative pumps. We can also advise on spares, vanes, service kits and repair options for many older vacuum pump models.

Do vacuum clamping pumps need regular servicing?

Yes. Dry running rotary vane pumps require vane and filter checks, while oil lubricated pumps require oil, filter and separator maintenance. Regular servicing helps prevent loss of vacuum performance, overheating and unexpected production downtime.
